APRIL 2007 BATH HOMEOWNERS NEWSLETTER

[Welcome to this online edition of our Newsletter. We publish our Newsletter on an "as needed" basis, but at least once each year, and try to have it delivered to all Bath residents. Newsletters will remain on this site for historical purposes until the next one is released, so some information may be outdated when you read it.]

smalllogo6.gif           April 2007 Bath Homeowners Newsletter

This is a very important issue of BHA’s newsletter, and timely.

Read it carefully. Doing so could save you, a homeowner, a considerable amount of money. The worst it can do is to help you avoid serious and costly problems with your septic system.

Other news concerns BHA’s annual meeting and the election of officers for the 2007-08 session.

Finding qualified people with the timeand interest – to run BHA is a difficult job. Experience and knowledge of the Township are also elemental requirements.

For those reasons, Nominating Committee Chairperson Jack Marshall was pleased - and grateful - when the current officers agreed to serve again.

First things first: BHA’s Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 25, in Bath Town Hall at 7p.m. Plan now to attend and, and if you are registered as a BHA member for 2007-08, to vote.

The slate of officers up for re-election: Jack Bonsky for President; Dick Lopez for Vice-President; Bob Heubeck for Treasurer; and Norma Setteur for Secretary.

As a homeowner in Bath you owe it to yourself to read what follows very carefully.

Effective January 1, 2007, Ohio adopted new rules covering household septic systems. The impact on homeowners is substantial since these rules set standards for location, design, installation, alteration, operation, monitoring, maintenance and abandonment of all septic systems.

The new rules apply to new septic systems but not to existing systems unless a system is significantly altered or replaced, which will be required if it becomes a public health nuisance (which broadly means “any condition of sewage that is potentially injurious to a person”). The Summit County Health Department decides when this condition exists.

It is not clear what effect the new rules will have on replacement systems. If you must fix your system and can get by with simply replacing components, you will be lucky. If you have to relocate your system or install a different type of system, costs could be considerable. In addition, all new and replacement systems will require an application fee, a permit fee for installation, alteration or replace and an operation fee.

Summit County’s inspection program for “off-lot” discharging septic systems remains in effect. Owners of those systems pay a $45 fee for each inspection, but not more frequently than every two years. Repairs resulting from an inspection are subject to the new rules.

QUESTIONS? We have more information on our web site at www.bathhomeowners.org. Or, call the Ohio Department of Health at 614-466-1390 (or visit their website at www.odh.ohio.gov), or call Summit County Health District at 330-923-4891 (or visit their website at www.schd.org).

All these developments obviously make it even more important to keep your present system working properly. Doing so could save you, literally, a ton of money. Bottom line…do not take a chance. Keep your system pumped out. We can help. Read on.

Bath’s Septic Clean Out process works like this: Use the BHA Membership form included in this newsletter. The Membership form should be accompanied by a $10 check for dues and anything else you wish to donate to BHA. Allow 4 weeks for processing your membership. Then call All Town & Country (330-745-2277) or dynamerican (330-666-8863) to arrange a clean out date. Membership lists are forwarded regularly to the two companies, but not daily.

You do not have to participate in the clean out program to join BHA, but if you have a septic system it is a good idea.

As a direct result of higher diesel fuel costs, septic clean out prices were increased September 1. So BHA members will pay slightly more this year. BHA has no role in price setting. It is entirely up to our suppliers. Member cost this year for one tank is $110 versus a $125 minimum for non-members. For the second tank the cost for members is $90 and $105 minimum for non-members. Members save more than BHA membership costs – not really a tough decision, huh? All Town & Country and dynamerican reserve the right to change prices at any time. You will not lose your discount, but you could pay more. So, do not wait. Join BHA and get your tanks cleaned out.

Do not send payment for the septic clean out. You pay only when the work is finished. As a convenience, we forward your name to All Town & Country and dynamerican. BHA does not make any money on the clean out program. We handle it to encourage septic tank owners to maintain their systems.

For the third time, Veteran Bath Chimney Sweep Frank Pugliese has a good deal for BHA members: $10 off on his regular fee of $75. So if you’re a BHA member and your chimney needs a good professional cleaning job – and you don’t mind saving $10 – call Frank at 330-666-5579. Frank has a membership list for verification.
